Vincent Moretti is one of two main protagonists in A Way Out.
Biography[]
In-game Description[]
After earning a college degree in financing and marrying his high school sweetheart, Vincent settled on a job in banking. Promises of easy money ended up shattering his whole life when he got drawn into the world of organized crime.
Background and Early Life[]
Vincent was born in 1929. His brother, Gary Moretti, was likely born within a few years of this. Vincent eventually became a police officer working for the bureau. His dedication to the job, combined with his love for Carol, caused tension in their marriage as he struggled to balance both sides of his life.
At one point, Vincent and Gary were involved in a sting operation to capture Leo Caruso and Harvey after the two had stolen a diamond known as the Black Orlov. Gary posed as a potential buyer for the jewel while Harvey and Leo negotiated with him. Meanwhile, Vincent and the police chief, James, monitored the deal from a surveillance van outside. The operation initially seemed to be going smoothly, but Harvey suddenly betrayed Leo by shooting Gary in the head. Harvey escaped with the Black Orlov, leaving Leo unconscious and Gary dead. Vincent and the officers rushed in after hearing the gunshot, only for Vincent to discover his brother’s lifeless body. Later, during Leo’s interrogation, Vincent realized Leo would never confess, and convinced James to let him go undercover inside the prison where Leo was being sent.
Events of A Way Out[]
The story begins with Vincent seated on a plane with Leo, before flashing back to Vincent’s arrival at prison on a transport bus. Inside the prison, Vincent repeatedly saves Leo from assassination attempts and eventually persuades him to join forces. Following Leo’s escape plan, the two successfully break free by relying on one another’s cooperation.
Their journey takes them through the wilderness where they camp overnight, catch fish for food, and bond as Vincent shares a cover story about why he is in prison. They later arrive at a farm, where they either force out or distract the elderly couple living there. Once inside, they change into new clothes, play around for a while, and repair an old truck before the couple returns and alerts the police. The chase that follows sends them down the mountainside to a river. At the edge of a waterfall, Vincent nearly falls to his death. Afterwards, he asks Leo to finally explain his past with Harvey. Leo recounts his story and the two agree to hunt Harvey down together. Before continuing, however, Leo insists on visiting his family to ensure their safety. Vincent agrees, and the two visit Linda and Alex, where Vincent meets them for the first time. After settling tensions and reconciling, Leo warns Linda to be ready to leave the country, then sets off again with Vincent.
In the city, they corner one of Harvey’s men, Ray, at a construction site. After roughing him up, they learn Harvey is in Mexico. Before heading south, they rob a gas station to buy weapons from one of Leo’s contacts. Vincent stops to call his contact and learns that his wife, Carol, has just given birth to their daughter. Soon after, the two narrowly survive an attack from a hitman sent by Harvey. Vincent and Leo then rush to the hospital, where Vincent meets his newborn daughter for the first time. Their reunion is short-lived, as the police arrive and force them to escape through the hospital. They later regroup with Emily, who agrees to fly them to Mexico.
Upon reaching Harvey’s compound, Vincent and Leo engage in a violent firefight, eventually killing Harvey. As they flee, Harvey’s men pursue them, but they escape back to the United States. However, a sting operation awaits upon landing. It is revealed that both Vincent and Emily were undercover police officers, and that Harvey had been responsible for killing Gary during the Black Orlov deal. Vincent had gone undercover in prison to get close to Leo, gain his trust, and ultimately track down Harvey.
Enraged by the betrayal, Leo seizes Vincent’s gun and takes him hostage in a police car. During the chaotic escape, Leo crashes the vehicle off a bridge and into a river. He manages to commandeer a boat while Vincent tries to stop him, but Leo kicks him away and speeds off. Vincent is rescued by Emily in a helicopter, and together they pursue Leo, attempting to disable his boat. Leo abandons the wreck and flees into a warehouse, where the final confrontation begins.
Inside, Leo disarms Emily and forces her to leave, insisting that the conflict is between him and Vincent alone. The two argue bitterly, with Leo accusing Vincent of betrayal and Vincent insisting he only wanted justice for Gary. Tensions escalate into a brutal fight and shootout inside the factory. As both men reach their breaking point, memories of their loved ones flash in their minds. Spotting a gun on the ground, they scramble for it, and the outcome depends on which of them gains control.
Endings[]
There are two possible outcomes for Vincent. In one, he survives but Leo dies. In the other, Vincent is the one who is killed:
If Vincent reaches the gun first, he fatally shoots Leo in the chest. Both men acknowledge the end of their bond, and share a final handshake before Leo dies. Time passes and Vincent visits Linda to tell her what happened. Overcome with grief, she forces him to leave while Alex watches silently. Vincent later reconciles with Carol, who reveals she named their daughter Julie. She invites him inside, and he accepts. Meanwhile, Linda and Alex are seen mourning at Leo’s grave.
If Leo reaches the gun first, he shoots Vincent in the chest. With his last breaths, Vincent asks Leo to deliver a letter he had written to Carol. Sometime later, Leo is shown with a beard, reunited with Linda and Alex as they prepare to leave town. Before leaving, Leo fulfills Vincent’s wish by placing the letter at Carol’s doorstep and quietly departing before she can see him. The epilogue shows Leo driving away with his family, while Carol mourns Vincent at his funeral as colleagues fire a three-volley salute in his honor.

Vincent and Leo reappear as dolls in an Easter Egg within the co-op adventure game and spiritual successor It Takes Two. When the player discovers them, May wonders what they are, and Cody explains that they are from his favorite video game and that he purchased them as a gift for their daughter Rose. Buttons near the dolls allow players to trigger recorded phrases from their original game, and pressing both at the same time unlocks a cutscene.
In the cutscene, the Leo doll angrily reminds Vincent that he is still upset about the betrayal, while Vincent calmly asks what he intends to do about it. Leo threatens to fight him, only for Vincent to point out that Leo cannot move from his stand. Frustrated, Leo realizes he is powerless, while Vincent appears amused by the situation.
Split Fiction[]

Vincent and Leo appear again as Easter Egg characters in the co-op adventure game Split Fiction. When Zoe and Mio encounter them during Mio’s sci-fi storyline, the two are found locked inside cages. Vincent urges the pair to activate a duel console that will release the cages into an abyss. Leo quickly objects, reminding Vincent that doing so would kill them both. Vincent, however, argues that it is only a simulation, and that he would rather fall to his death than listen to Leo talking shit all day long. Leo fires back, insisting that his chatter is what keeping them alive whilst locked up, and that he is funny, though Vincent flatly disagrees and once again asks Zoe and Mio to press the buttons. In desperation, Leo proposes a bet: if he can make Vincent laugh, then Zoe and Mio must spare them. Vincent accepts, but Leo cannot think of a good joke, exclaiming that it is impossible under pressure. Since Leo lost the bet, Vincent once more asks Zoe and Mio to push the buttons, while Leo exclaims that Vincent will not get away with this but Vincent remains apathetic.
If the players follow through, both cages plunge into the abyss. Leo screams “I HATE YOU, VINCENT!” while Vincent shouts back “WHATEVER, LEO!” Afterwards, Zoe reacts in shock to what they have just done, but Mio remains unfazed, noting that Vincent and Leo probably would have carried out the act themselves anyway.
