Five Lakes is a region in a fictional Northern California, USA that boasts diverse environmental biomes. It stretches from the coast and into forested mountains and arid chaparral. The downtown area is home to many of the game's characters, a growing skyline, and an active industrial port.

- Although no character speaks the city's name, mentions of it can be seen in visual details such as car license plates, state trooper car door decals, convenience store refrigeration units, and the Five Lakes Motel's sign.
- The California detail isn't directly mentioned in the game, though can be inferred via things such as environmental details. However, the location was confirmed by Hazelight developer "Ortner" on the official Hazelight discord on April 5 2018.
